مراقبت از پوست نوزادانی که با وزن کمتر از ۲۵۰۰ گرم متولد می شوند، در ۲۱ روز اول پس از تولد یکی از وظایف مهم پرستاری می باشد. گرچه در یک آمارگیری در آمریکا تعداد نوزادان با وزن کمتر از ۲۵۰۰ گرم حدود ۱-۰/ ۶٪ گزارش شده است، اما جهت افزایش شانس زنده ماندن آنها و هم چنین پیشگیری از بروز عفونت مسئله مراقبت از پوست اهمیت می یابد. در گذشته بیشتر نوزادان نارس بعلت سپتی سمی و یا عدم تعادل آب و الکترولیت در چند روز اول زندگی تلف می شدند که هر دو عامل فوق ناشی از آسیب دیدگی مناطق وسیعی از پوست می باشد.
